Welcome back Year Five!
We have lots of exciting things planned for next week…
Next week in English, our journey into the world of mythical and legendary creatures continues! Drawing inspiration from Monsterology, we will be writing detailed descriptions of spectacular beasts from the air and sea as part of our non-chronological reports module. To bring our writing to life, we'll focus on mastering conjunctions, prepositions, and adverbial phrases. We will also learn how to use relative clauses and accurate punctuation to pack our sentences with fascinating details.
Next week in maths, we will continue to explore the exciting world of decimal numbers with tenths. We'll start by discovering how these numbers are built, looking at how they can be put together both additively and multiplicatively (for example, knowing that (0.7 is 0.5 + 0.2 or 7 times 0.1). From there, we will practice calculating with decimals, working both within a single whole and crossing over one whole (like 0.8 + 0.5). Finally, we will bring it all together by recapping formal column addition and subtraction with decimals, ensuring our place value columns and decimal points line up perfectly for accurate calculations.
We have some exciting topics lined up across the curriculum! In science, we are exploring light by learning about transparent and opaque objects. The children will get hands-on with a flashlight penetration test to investigate different materials. In RE, we will be discovering the core beliefs of Judaism and Christianity, looking closely at the similarities and differences between the Torah and the Bible. Finally, our history journey begins with the fall of the Roman Empire as we introduce our new topic on the Anglo-Saxons.
