Cobalt 2026/27

Welcome to Year 4 and Team Cobalt

Your teacher is Mrs Holman

Your teaching assistants are Miss Akther, Miss Vaughan and Miss Udin

Welcome back!

It has been lovely to see everyone again after the half-term break and we have all made a fantastic start to Autumn 2.

Next week in English, we will be continuing to immerse ourselves in explanation texts. We will write some entertaining sentences to explain how a dishwasher works, using the imaginary explanation of this process in the book, ‘Until I met Dudley.’ We will also write to inform, and write a short explanation using technical vocabulary and accurate information, before reflecting on the differences between the text types. We will focus on the use of subordinate clauses and adverbial phrases, and check the accuracy of our punctuation.

In Mathematics, we will continue to work on our understanding of perimeter as the total distance around a 2D shape. Throughout the lessons, we will develop the problem-solving skills needed to find the length of unknown sides when given the overall perimeter and other known sides. Additionally, we will learn that the perimeter of a regular polygon can be calculated through multiplication rather than repeated addition. Finally, we will also explore the inverse relationship between these operations, recognising that the individual side length of a regular polygon can be calculated by division whenever the total perimeter is known.

In addition to this, we are also looking forward to our exciting curriculum learning! Next week in Science, we will start the lesson by looking at a photo of Gadebridge Park and discuss the changes which happen as the seasons alter. We will then work in groups and became habitat detectives in the school grounds where we will look for the available food and shelter we could find for local habitats on the top playground, lower playground and school garden. Back in the classroom we will work together to write down ‘what would happen if’ questions about the animals in the school garden if the season changes and carry out a P4C discussion based on our favourite question. In DT, we are excited to continue our new topic and begin designing our own Christmas decorations using annotated sketches. We will consider the purpose of our products and think about the colours, shapes and embellishments we are going to use, whilst also reflecting on our intended users.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

PE days for Team Cobalt will be Mondays and Thursdays

Please bring in library books on a Tuesday and your Reading Records on Fridays as we look to celebrate reading at home.

Weekly Highlights

Week commencing 02.11.26

This week in Maths, we have been investigating the concept of perimeter. We found out that perimeter is the total distance around the outside of a 2D shape. We used string to help us measure the perimeter of four shapes. After this, we placed the string on our rulers to find out the exact perimeter of each shape and this allowed us to compare the perimeters. We then ordered the shapes from longest to shortest perimeter.

Week commencing 19.10.26

This week in PSHE, we have been discussing the concept of democracy. We learnt what it is and the ways in which it is present in our own lives. To help our understanding, we held a 'Biscuit Party Election', whereby each group was given a different biscuit to speak on behalf of. We then held a classroom election, setting up our own ballot box and taking a vote on which biscuit we would like to elect. The results are in, with Chocolate Digestives securing a firm majority! In addition to this, we have also finished our artwork based on the artist Henri Rousseau. Take a look at our beautiful creations!

In music this week we have continued to enjoy learning how to play our ukuleles, as well as using our voices to sing some fun songs. We all sounded beautiful! As Geographers, we have explored our local area; studying photos of places in Hemel Hempstead both old and new and considering the human and physical geographical differences between them. We were able to spot lots of human geographical differences including more roads, more houses, bigger buildings and different shops.

In Art this week, we have been exploring different mediums. We used the medium of oil pastels to do some mark making in our sketchbooks and extended a picture by the artist we are studying this half- term: Henri Rousseau. We focused on using different shades and shapes in order to create depth and texture in our work. Check out our beautiful examples below...
