Welcome to Year 4 and Team Cobalt

    Our week in Year 4…

In English this week, we continued with our non-fiction module, learning about travel leaflets. We continued to take inspiration from the texts, ‘Africa, Amazing Africa’ and ‘India, incredible India.’ We looked at some of the locations in Hemel Hempstead and wrote persuasive sentences to encourage people to visit. We thought about the power of three, rhetorical questions and the use of expanded noun phrases. Next week, we will be focussing on our presentation and we will write our travel leaflets using our best handwriting, with a focus on ascenders and descenders, and the correct letter formation.

In Maths this week, we have continued our learning on fractions, focussing on mixed numbers and improper fractions. We have used lots of diagrams to help us understand how to add and subtract mixed numbers and improper fractions. The methods can be very tricky, but we have practiced lots and have been able to use our times tables knowledge to help us.

As well as this, we have continued to work hard on our times tables with some daily rockin’ as we approach our Year 4 MTC. Practising little and often both at home and in school really does make all the difference, so keeeeeepppp rockin’ Year 4!! Next week, we will be focussing on our times tables and we will continue with our daily chanting and other methods of practice. We will concentrate on being as fluent and accurate as possible with the range of facts up to 12 x 12.

During PSHE, we had to think about people, pets, places, objects and memories that are special to us, and discuss why we appreciate them. We then created rainbows which captured our thoughts and expressed our gratitude.

As scientists, we explored how distance affects sound. To help test the theory, we made string telephones with different lengths string to see if the sound increased or decreased the longer the string got.

In History, we have explored the significant legacies of the Ancient Greek civilization. These included democracy, maths, the alphabet, science and medicine, theatre, democracy and of course, the Olympics. We explored each legacy and considered what modern life would be like without it. We then voted on which legacy we thought was the most important. Afterwards, we focussed in on the legacy of the Olympics and had a go at designing our own Ancient Greek Olympic programme of events.

Next week, we are very much looking forward to curriculum week:
