A slightly shorter week, but we have still packed a lot in!
In English this week, started a new non-fiction module. We began by looking at the texts, ‘Africa, Amazing Africa’ and ‘India, incredible India.’ We looked at the features of the texts, including persuasive techniques and how the authors encourage us to visit. We enjoyed choosing our own locations (an exotic island, a busy city, an isolated house and a beautiful harbour) and we wrote short descriptions about them, including lots of lovely vocabulary and expanded noun phrases. Next week, we are looking forward to discussing some of the locations in Hemel Hempstead. We will then collect information to write our own leaflets about our home town, and include lots of persuasive features.
In Maths this week, we have continued our learning on fractions, focussing on mixed numbers and improper fractions. We have used lots of diagrams to help us understand and learnt how to make a mixed number and how to make an improper fraction. To make a mixed number, count the number of wholes, then the number of parts you have left over. To make an improper fraction, count the number of parts there are. We have also learnt how to convert between mixed numbers and improper fractions using fifths and quarters. As well as this, we have continued to work hard on our times tables with some daily rockin’ as we approach our Year 4 MTC. Practising little and often both at home and in school really does make all the difference, so keeeeeepppp rockin’ Year 4!! Next week, we will continue to learn about fractions, looking at how to add and subtract with our mixed numbers.
In our RE lesson, we researched and compared festivals from two different religions: Diwali (Hinduism) and Christmas (Christianity). We discussed how light is used in both religions, and during important celebrations and explored what was similar about the two religions.
During PSHE, we talked about the positive things about having friends. We also explored changes in friendships and whether this is a normal part of life, and that as we get older, our friendship groups can change. In small groups, we discussed ways in which friendships can change or sometimes end and thought about how to solve conflicts which can sometimes occur within a friendship.
As scientists, we explored how the volume of sounds are created and looked at representations of sound waves that show different volumes. We conducted our own experiment to explore how the length of the sound waves altered as we moved further away from the source of sound.
Have a great weekend, everyone!
