Sapphire

Welcome to Year 5 and Team Sapphire 2025/26

Your teacher is Ms Ellis

Your teaching assistants are Miss Allwork, Miss Blackwell and Miss Green.

The children have had another busy and successful week!

This week in maths we have recapped short multiplication, long multiplication and division and then applied these methods to 4-digit numbers. We have also practised using these methods to help us solve problems. In English, we finished our poetry unit by creating a poem to inspire year 4 or year 6 children. We then had the opportunity to perform these to the clas, which the children did a fantastic job with. We also spent some time publishing our non-chronological reports.

In PSHE, we talked about how a healthy lifestyle is made of aspects relating to your physical health, mental health and socialisation. We used these categories to think about what we might notice if we were not making healthy lifestyle choices. We also had a debate about if the media helps us to make healthy lifestyle choices. In RE, we recapped the Christian festival of Easter and the Jewish festival of Passover and considered the themes they both deal with. We then used this to think about some questions for a P4C discussion.

In Geography, we recapped the differences between human and physical geography. We then compared England to Iceland in both their human and physical geography. In science, we continued our forces unit by learning about levers, pulleys and gears. We thought about how these mechanisms work and where more and less force is needed.

Next term in maths, we will continue to revise times tables and division methods and will apply these to worded problems. In English, we will start our next unit, which is an explanation text. We will look at the features of an explanation text, we will gather vocabulary and information about the Vikings, as our end piece will be an explanation text about the Vikings, we will look at how to write an engaging introduction that will hook the reader, and we will practise using a variety of conjunctions within our writing.

We hope you have a fantastic two weeks off.

Next term, Sapphire's PE days will change to a Tuesday and Wednesday.

Congratulations to this half term's Values winners for enthusiasm:

Highlights of the Week (Wb 23.03.26)

Congratulations to the weekly Achievement winners!

Highlights of the Week (Wb 16.03.26)

This week in DT, we used the glue guns to attach the wood together to construct the Viking houses.

Highlights of the Week (Wb 09.03.23)

Congratulations to the achievement certificate winners for this week. For Science week, we explored making a boat out of paper that could hold as much weight as possible without sinking. We knew that a larger surface area would be needed for the force of upthrust to push against. In DT this week, we started to measure and saw the wood that we need to make the structure of a Viking house.

Highlights of the Week (Wb 02.03.26)

In DT this week, everyone baked some amazing savoury muffins.

Highllights of the Week (Wb 23.02.26)

In DT this week we designed our Viking houses.

Highlights of the Week (Wb 13.02.26)

In Art this week, we used water colours to create some fantastic pictures in the style of Daniel Mackie. In Science, we investigated water resistance by dropping some bluetac of different shapes into the water to see if the shape affected how quickly it sunk through the water.

Highlight of the Week (Wb 02.02.25)

In maths this week, we used multilink cubes to build cubed numbers. Well done to all the Achievement certificate winners for this week!

Highlight of the Week (Wb 26.01.26)

This week in Art we created tone using watercolours.

Highlight of the Week (12.01.26)

In PE this week, we had great fun learning some trampolining skills. We also really enjoyed playing some of the winning Maths games from the Christmas Maths Challenge. In Science, we used force meters to measure the weight of objects and in Art we used some cross hatching skills to create tone.

Highlights of the Week (06.01.26)

Congratulations to our weekly certificate winners.

Highllights of the Week (Wb 19.12.25)

This week in Art we had great fun making our Anglo Saxon jewellery, using embossing techniques.

Highlights of the Week (Wb 08.12.25)

This week, we had great fun on our trip to the Chiltern Open Air Museum to learn about Anglo Saxon village life and we used our history skills to learn about the past in an archaeological dig too!

Highlights of the Week (24.11.25)

This week in Computing we had a computer workshop. The children became computer programmers, coding to keep a diamond (kept in a vault) safe from would-be thieves!

Highlights of the week (Wb 17.11.25)

This week in Science, we investigated which material was the best insulator to keep a cup of water warm for the longest period.

Highlights of the Week (Wb 10.11.25)

This week in Maths, we have been learning how to use the bus stop method of division. To start with, we used counters to help us understand the process.

Highlights of the Week (Wb 04.11.25)

Well done to our Achievement Certificate winners for this week. In RE this week, we were learning about the importance of looking for the good in our lives and being thankful for the things we have.

Highlights of the Week (Wb 20.10.25)

This week, in Science we investigated the properties of different materials. We tested for magnetism, permeability, hardness, flexibility and if the materials were transparent.

Highlights of the Week (Wb 13.10.25)

This week, for PSHE we had a workshop about well-being and we learnt some strategies for how to be resilient. In PE, we competed in the Cross Country event at Adeyfield School. There were some amazing runners and a really supportive team cheering them on.

Highlights of the Week (Wb 06.10.25)

In PSHE this week, we worked as a team to build the tallest tower possible using only paper and sellotape. We had to listen to each other, share ideas, cooperate and encourage each other.

Highlights of the Week (Wb 29.09.25)

In PE this week, Sapphire had great fun learning some tag rugby skills.

Highlight of the Week (Wb 22.09.25)

In Science this week, we investigated if the temperature of the water affected how quickly the salt dissolved.

Highlight of the Week (Wb 15.09.25)

This week, we had great fun in Computing, coding instructions for a game.
