Another busy week in Year 4!
In English this week, we continued with our report writing module, and we concluded a newspaper report about some strange events in year four, where some chocolate biscuits were stolen from team Cobalt and team Citron. We have enjoyed writing them and including the features of reports, along with different sentence types: subordinate clauses and adverbial phrases. We also used inverted commas to quote some eyewitnesses! Next week, we will be looking at the features of travel leaflets. We will be inspired with the texts, ‘Africa, Amazing Africa’ and ‘India, incredible India.’ We will then collect information to write our own leaflets about our home town, Hemel Hempstead.
This week in Maths, we have been learning how to order a range of mixed numbers. We began by using number lines to compare a range of fractions and mixed numbers. We then progressed to comparing fractions and mixed numbers with the same numerator (number on top of the fraction). We learnt that the bigger the denominator (bottom number of the fraction) the smaller the fraction will be, as this means that the whole thing has been divided into more equal parts. As well as this, we have focused on learning how to add and subtract fractions efficiently. Next week, we will continue our learning on fractions, focussing on how to convert between mixed numbers and improper fractions.
For our science, we explored the journey sound vibrations make through the ear. We explored the pitch of musical instruments before moving on to making our own panpipes to experience this for ourselves. We found out that quicker vibrations produce a higher pitch and slower vibrations create a lower pitch.
During RE this week, we all took part in a P4C lesson, (Philosophy for Children). We watched a video about right and wrong, and generated questions for discussion relating to right and wrong. We then voted for our favourite question and discussed our thoughts. We listened carefully to each other and responded respectfully, saying whether we agreed or disagreed with each other’s points and why.
As historians, we learnt about one of the most famous historical figures from the Ancient Greek Empire, Alexander the Great. Firstly, we looked at different artefacts to see how he has been depicted throughout history. Then, we explored the story of Alexander the Great and learnt how he vastly expanded the Greek empire, how he conquered Ancient Greece and exactly what made him so great! We designed our own statues with all the achievements we found out about in order to commemorate him.
Have a great weekend, everyone!
