In English this week, we enjoyed revisiting the short animation created by Jacob Frey called 'The Present' and we wrote the narrative to accompany the film. We focussed on the dialogue between the main characters, and the accurate use of speech rules:
•write in the present tense
•use inverted commas around what is being said
•start with a capital letter
•end the speech with a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark
•start a new line for a new speaker
Next week, we will be reading some poems from The Works edited by Paul Cookson. We will be reading some haikus and we will spend the week writing one of our own. We will be inspired by the outdoors and go on a springtime walk around school, record any vocabulary that signifies spring and compile a list of sights, smells and sounds, including onomatopoeia - words that sound like the noise they describe!
This week in Maths, we have continued our work on co-ordinates. We have learnt how to identify co-ordinates on a grid, going ‘along the corridor and up the stairs’ and practiced writing them correctly using brackets and a comma. We then had a go at plotting some co-ordinates ourselves, before progressing to plotting a series of co-ordinates all on the same grid and joining them up to create a range of polygons including squares , rectangles, trapeziums and parallelograms. We have also practiced describing the translation (movement) of 2 identical shapes on a grid from one point to another. Next week, we will be starting a new topic for Year 4, all about fractions. We will revisit key concepts and vocabulary from our fractions learning in Year 3 and have opportunities to remember what we learnt from the previous year.
In Science, we have set up an ‘eggsperiment’ to investigate which liquids are healthy and unhealthy for your teeth. We have submerged six eggs in a range of different liquids including water, toothpaste, vinegar, coke, milk and orange juice, in order to see the effect of each liquid on the teeth. We have made predictions about which liquids will be healthiest and unhealthiest and will continue to monitor the effects of the liquids on the eggs over the coming weeks. Watch this space for the results!
What an amazing week we have had working with our local community. We were extremely lucky to have another visit from Electric Umbrella on Monday. This incredible charity uses the power of music to spark conversations about difference, break down barriers, challenge perceptions and inspire lasting change. We very much enjoyed a whole school assembly and an additional workshop, where we were all able to join in with the fun. What a great start to the week! Thank you, Electric Umbrella!
We also visited Adeyfield School on Thursday for a Speed Stacking Festival, where the children had to work in small groups to assemble speed cups as fast as possible – we have been practising in our PE lessons this term and very much enjoyed this experience.
It has also been British Science Week - we completed an experiment in class to identify different inks using a technique called chromatography. We discovered how to identifywhich pen was used to write a ransom note when Mrs Short’s golden stickers went missing!
On Friday, we also had a visit from Ranveer’s Dad, who talked to us about blood! We discovered lots of new facts, including blood types and foods that are healthy for our blood. Fun fact: Did you know that the colour of blood is different for different animals?
This was an amazing end to the week!
Have a great weekend, everyone!
PE days for year 4 will be on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
Please bring in library books on a Friday
